I woke up to a bluebird day, as forecast. And set about exploring the tracks at the North end of Pisa Range. I was intrigued by the variety of terrain along the 45km of tracks I explored. And the elevation changes that you don't notice from the valleys below. And once again, the temperature lifted considerably I descended into Cromwell, where I needed to restock food supplies.
I made my way through the Kawarau Gorge to have a look at the Macetown track in Arrowtown. The river level was crossable but dirty from the previous nights rain. And it is my rule of thumb to not attempt water crossings where I can't see the bottom, so I turned around and continued on the Skippers Canyon. Now with a bit of spare time, I went sightseeing to the end of The Branches, where the Shotover River opens up.
At Skippers, I made it about halfway along the Skippers Creek track thinking it was a G4. It was more worn down that I expected, and when I stopped for a breather, checked my info, and saw it was actually a G5! I realised it was no place for me to be solo with a loaded bike omlm road tyres. So I turned around and headed back out to Queenstown for my first night of the trip with internet, a hot shower, and washing machine.
